Getting Skinny

Okay, I know this blog is about food but enough is enough! I started off the new year working out and at first is was no fun,but now I'm feeling pretty good. In the spirit of eating I had to find some recipes that still tasted good, filled me up and allowed me to keep my caloric intake to acceptable levels for myself. My beloved bride found a keeper so here it is:

Honey Curry chicken:

Curry glaze:

1/3 cup melted butter
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard
1T Curry powder

Bake a chicken breast lightly seasoned serve over a bed of Jasmine rice and lightly drizzle the curry glaze over the top and you have yourself a filling 375-400 calorie dish!

Man vs Food UPDATE

The bastardo cheated just as I suspected! Here is the proof:

A chemical called capsaicin in the peppers binds to your taste buds and feels like they are burning the hell out of your mouth. Water does nothing, really, but dillute it momentarily, and sugary juices make it worse by opening up your taste buds and allowing more capsaicin in. Milk, on the other hand, binds to capsaicin more tightly than capsaicin binds to your taste buds. When you drink the milk down, the capsaicin goes down with it.

So when he drank the milk he was wiping the taste buds clean and starting afresh. Shame on you Adam, I now like Tony Bourdain better!

Cheesecake!

My baby sister Kim is turning 24 this month and has requested a cheesecake from scratch! Stay tuned for pictures and recipes of her birthday cake. I am going to have some fun with this one and try something new and crazy!

Watching my show !

I have to say I really enjoy man vs. food. I just watched an episode where the host Adam ate 6 atomic wings from the Quaker Steak and Lube in PA. I think he cheated by drinking milk halfway through the challenge. A real man like myself could easily handle it without the assistance of soothing liquids. Also he ate them as fast as he could as part of his strategy, I would eat them nice and slow enjoying every savory minute and gleefully hiding my pain like a NINJA!

Adam man up and quit being a Sally!

What is a Foodie anyway?

Foodie is a term that we throw around a lot.The dictionary defines a foodie as "someone who has an ardent or refined interest in food." In previous decades, words like "epicure" or "gourmet" were used to apply to the same type of person. The words are out of favor now, and bring to mind stodgy, snobbish people who are only willing to consider a restaurant that has truffled pate on the menu. This is because good food was hard to get and expensive in years, decades and centuries past. People didn't have the resources to buy virtually anything they could want and often wouldn't have the means to cook it. Now, both times and terms have changed.

Anyone can be a foodie.

To be a foodie is not only to like food, but to be interested in it. Just as a good student will have a thirst for knowledge, a foodie wants to learn about food. A foodie will never answer the question "What are you eating" with "I don't know." There are some basic traits of being a foodie, as there are basic traits that come with all labels. Generally, you have to know what you like, why you like it, recognize why some foods are better than others and want to have good tasting food all or certainly most of the time. This doesn't mean that you can't eat flaming hot Cheetos every now and again, but it does mean that you don't fool yourself into thinking that it's a nutritionally balanced meal. Do you have to know the difference between a beefsteak tomato and an heirloom tomato? No, but you might be interested to find out what it is. Do you have to only shop at farmer's markets? No, but you still look for good, fresh produce. Are there some foods you just don't like or weird foods you like? That's ok - it doesn't make you any less of a foodie. Just like food, learn about food and, most importantly, eat food.

I'm Back!

After much thought I will be pouring out my heart and soul right here. Check back soon for updates.
